PAST EVENTS: 

August 2017 – Movie in the Park: Our social event for the month was seeing Hidden Figures play in Millennium Park.

June 2017 – GWIS Chicago 3rd annual Fundraiser: The fundraiser featured raffle prizes and a silent auction supported by local Chicago businesses.

April 2017 – Industry Career Panel: Speakers from major pharmaceutical companies talked about careers in Industry.

March 2017 General Meeting:  GWIS Chicago discussed about updates on available officer positions, volunteering opportunities, and information on March for Science.

February 2017 Science Policy Panel: Four wonderful panelists discussed what “Science Policy” is and opportunities in this area.

September 2016 GWIS Chicago Science Talks: Four of our members spoke about their research with topics in biological and chemical sciences.

June 2016 Advice on academic jobs from applications to interviews: One of our members recently got an academic job (congratulations Megan!) and came to speak to us about the application and interview processes.

May 2016 Annual Fundraiser: We had a fabulous 2016 fundraiser with great sponsors and made money to support our travel grants! Thank you for a wonderful 2016 fundraiser! The event was a great success and we raised enough money to keep our travel grant program going for another few  years! Thank you so much to all of our wonderful sponsors: Equipoise SalonGlazed and InfusedCore Power YogaiO theater, Adler PlanetariumChicagoland GamesThe Logan TheaterGraham Crackers, and especially Lagunitas for providing beverages for the event! April 2016 GWIS Eta Science Talks: Our first of hopefully many Science Talks sessions. 4 of our members presented their research.

March 2016: Careers in Science Journalism and Arts: Our three panelists discussed career options for people who are interested in integrating arts and communication with science.

December 2015: Cookie exchange/Holiday party

November 2015: Pregnancy and work-life balance in science Our two panelists discussed their experiences having children in an academic setting followed by a great discussion session.

October 2015: CV/Resume Workshop We provided a short presentation on how to tailor your CV/Resume for teaching and research career track positions in the sciences.

August 2015: Social Event Due to poor weather we weren’t able to see Dirty Dancing in Millenium Park but did get together for drinks and appetizers at The Game Room. Thanks everyone for coming!

July 2015: Communications/Public Speaking workshop and Mentorship social We had a great Communications and Public Speaker workshop with the wonderful Kelley Ristow and later had a short information session on our new mentorship program.

June 2015: Mentorship social  – Postponed due to severe weather

May 2015: General Meeting – We held annual elections, announced our travel grant recipients, and celebrated the end of the academic year with drinks and food.

April 2015: Project Exploration – Two members of Project Exploration came to discuss science outreach opportunities in Chicago.

March 2015: Elevator Pitches – We learned how to create the perfect short elevator pitch and practiced our pitches with each other.

February 2015: Social Event at Sidebar Grille and a Science Outreach Event at a local high school

January 2015: Careers in Healthcare and Government – Teena Francois-Blue, the Associate Director of  Community Health Initiatives at the metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force and Dr. Kristene Henne, the Postdoctoral Program Coordinator at Argonne National Labs gave a career panel on alternative careers.

December 2014: GWIS Eta Annual Fundraiser – Our 2014 fundraiser helped raise funds to support two travel grants for our members in 2015.

November 2014: Careers in Academic panel and CV workshop – Drs. Judy Bolton and Nancy Freitag answered questions about careers in academia for female scientists and shared their career pathways with us. Dr. Tiara Perez-Morales gave a short workshop on writing your CV.
