February 2018- Career Outside of Academia

Youbean Oak, PhD. Managing Consultant, Navigant – Prior to joining Navigant, she was part of the life sciences team at SimonKucher & Partners. Youbean has advised clients ranging from top-25 pharmaceutical and medical device companies to small- to mid-sized life sciences companies, helping them with successful commercialization of innovations. Youbean received her PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Harvard University, where she was a Herchel Smith Research Fellow. She holds BAs in Biology and Mathematics from Cornell University.

Mia Dvora, PhD. Senior Scientist, Abbott – As a senior scientist, Mia works in technical support, specializing in CAPA investigations and change control for molecular diagnostic assays. She received her Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida. She earned her doctorate in Chemical Engineering at Louisiana State University. She performed postdoctoral research in metabolic engineering of *Camelina sativa* for biofuel production under a DOE ARPA-E Grant.


Natalia Marangoni, PhD. Medical Science Liaison, Teva Pharma. – While working at Teva Pharmaceuticals, Natalia’s areas of expertise are Multiple sclerosis and headache. Prior to joining Teva Pharmaceuticals, she worked as a lecturer at UIC and an adjunct assistant professor at Dominican University. Natalia received her Bachelors degree in Physiology and Molecular Biology from University of Buenos Aires. She holds PhD degree in Neuroscience from UIC.



January 2018- Science Talks from GWIS Chicago members

Our members volunteered to give talks about their scientific projects, ranging from ecology to nanotechnology! The talks did not only increase our awareness on the scientific diversity that our members are actively involved in but also showcase their wonderful public speaking skill!

November 2017- Career Workshop: Prepare Yourself For Careers Beyond Academia

After the presentation. Merle Ward dive into deeper discussion with the Q & R session which was very engaging. Some discussion points: how to increase your competitive edge in acquiring your dream job beyond academia using four different tactics. You had to be there to hear these four pointers.

Merle goes over each individuals resume to give them some pointers as to how to improve their resume to get from the “bigger pile” to the “smaller pile”.



September 2017: Healthcare Career in Genetic Counseling: The Crossroads of Genetics, Medicine, and Patient Advocacy

Genetic Counselor guest speaker: Lindsay Rhodes (GeneDx and Genetic Task Force of Illinois) and Shelly Weiss (Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago). They describe the diversification of their career path.   Board Certification with the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) MS, CGC


Lindsay has been involved in many publications in scientific journals which other Genetic Counselors have done throughout their careers


Shelly Weiss shares her industrial and global experiences.  She has been involved in management, sales, internal research, insurance relations and many other roles.


Lindsay Rhodes takes us through the process of how they solve complex cases that Genetic Counselors encounter in their field. Many people are unaware of what a Genetics Counselors does. The genetic field has evolved over the years beyond just counseling family about the risk of inherited conditions to their offsprings.
